Our new book, Mouth Wide Open: This was published in early December 2007, and has received great reviews all over the country. We’re happy to offer you the opportunity to buy an autographed and, if you like, inscribed copy (please see information below) directly from us. Because of limitations inherent in our basic “shopping cart” software, anyone outside the USA who would like a copy should contact us directly.

Our previous books are all out of print. If you would be satisfied with a simple used copy, we suggest you check out the usual sites, such as Amazon.com, ABE Books, or Alibris. However, if you'd like a copy in reasonably fine condition, autographed by Matt and myself, and perhaps inscribed to you or someone else (see directly below), we're pleased to offer the following titles. Note that supplies of the out-of-print books are limited — if you want more than a single copy of any of these titles, check with us before ordering.

Ordering more than one book: our rather simple secure shopping cart doesn't allow us to temper postage charges if you buy more than one book. So, we're providing discount vouchers instead. If you buy two books, enter 109220056 for $1.50 off shipping; if buying three books, enter 209220111 for $2.50 off.

Inscriptions: Matt and I are happy to inscribe books on request. To do this, we need the name of the recipient as you would like us to write it. In other words, please don’t just say “inscribe to me” and leave it to us to decide if you mean “Howard Winston Bellows III” or “Howard” or “Howie.”

Mouth Wide Open

Pot on the Fire

This collection of culinary essays follows in the footsteps of Thorne's award-winning Outlaw Cook. Again, in classic Thorne style, he engages us in his lifelong fascination with the world's essential dishes. His curiosity ranges far and wide, from nineteenth-century famine-struck Ireland to the India of the British Raj, from the trail of a mysterious Vietnamese sandwich ("Banh mi). and Me") or "The Best Cookies in the World." Whether he is "Desperately Resisting Risotto" or discovering the perfect breakfast, Thorne is an erudite and intrepid guide who, in unveiling the gastronomic wonders, also reveals us to ourselves. Available to American customers only. Shipping is by media mail and costs $3.50. Massachusetts residents must pay sales tax.

Pot on the Fire

Serious Pig

With an appetite for accuracy to match his appreciation of food at its purest (an issue of form as well as content), John Thorne tracks down the origins of dishes that have captured his heart and imagination along with his palate. The book focuses mainly in three regional food-ways: New England's pioneer and Atlantic coast cooking, with a focus on Maine (in a section titled "Here"); Louisiana's Cajun tradition (in the section "There"); and Texas's cowboy heritage of chili, barbecue and cornbread (in "Everywhere," which includes brief looks at hamburgers, white bread and other all-American inventions). Besides recipes, the reader will find thoughtful, informed and opinionated disquisitions on such as jambalaya, chili (16 recipes chart its development, the first from an 1880 cookbook) and a global survey of dishes made with rice and beans. Publishers Weekly says of this book, "A rich and utterly unbalanced table of dishes likely to start readers thinking seriously about their own gustatory identities. The bibliography is better than dessert." Available to American customers only. Shipping is by media mail and costs $3.50. Massachusetts residents must pay sales tax.
